Contralesa welcomes recommendation to pardon AbaThembu king

President of the Congress of Traditional Leaders of South Africa (Contralesa) Kgoshi Mathuba Mokoena says the organisation welcomes a formal application by Justice Minister Michael Masutha to pardon AbaThembu king Buyelekhaya Dalindyebo.

The Presidency has reportedly confirmed President Cyril Ramaphosa received Masutha's recommendation.

Dalindyebo is serving an effective 12-year prison term for three counts of arson, three counts of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, one count of defeating the ends of justice and one count of kidnapping.

Mokoena says while they do not condone Dalindyebo's actions, he should be released.

They managed to forgive (Adriaan) Vlok, (Magnus) Malan, (Eugine) de Kock and everybody else, those who killed our people. Why not our king? We are not saying what he did was not wrong or make it seem like we are disregarding the justice system in our country.

If it was customary law I don't think he was going to be where he is now.

Two days ago Ramaphosa was given six days, by three traditional rulers from the Eastern Cape, to release Dalindyebo from prison or lose critical votes in the region on 8 May.

Mokoena says this is not the first time Contralesa has made a call for the king to be pardoned.

The president, he and his advisers, I am telling you, they will consider the matter reasonably.
