This story has been updated.

The floods engulfing the country since last week have claimed 32 lives in KwaZulu-Natal so far.

Homes have collapsed, while children have drowned in mudslides.

Several institutions, including schools and universities, have closed for the day.

Clement Manyathela spoke to KwaZulu-Natal Co-operative Governance MEC Nomusa Dube-Ncube on the Xolani Gwala Show.

The areas affected are Umlazi, Chatsworth, New Germany, Malvern and areas around Durban Airport.

We have a number of schools that have been closed. It is better if we keep learners at home than at schools.

Dube-Ncube appeals to residents of the affected areas to head home early before it gets dark. She pleads with employers to be considerate.

We are told the rain will continue in the afternoon and a number of roads will be closed.
