'Ramaphosa may have to remove Mrwebi and Jiba by tonight'

Critics say President Cyril Ramaphosa has little choice but to remove Nomgcobo Jiba from office as Deputy National Director of Public Prosecutions, as well as Lawrence Mrwebi as Special Director of Public Prosecutions by Thursday night.

In a scathing 140-page report seen by Eyewitness News retired Constitutional Court Justice Yvonne Mokgoro established that the pair is neither fit nor proper to hold their respective offices within the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).

She has recommended that Ramaphosa remove the pair.

Earlier this month, the president asked Jiba and Mrwebi to make representations they may have in response to Mokgoro’s report.

To share their views on the matter, the Council for the Advancement of the South African Constitution (Casac) executive secretary Lawson Naidoo, Freedom Under Law's chief executive officer Nicole Fritz and Advocate Glynnis Breytenbach shared their views on the matter.

We assume that it is the real report, it makes strong findings against Jiba and Mrwebi. On the basis of what is contained in the report, the findings would seem to suggest that the president has little option but to follow the recommendations that Mokgoro has made.

Lawson Naidoo, Executive secretary - Casac

Today is the last day of their suspension. Failure on the part of the president to issue a decision would be mean that the suspension no longer obtains. The deadline is tonight. He can make the decision at another period but they are then free to return to work...

Nicole Fritz, CEO - Freedom Under Law

If the president does not make up his mind today, then they are entitled to go back to work. Their influence on the NPA has been nothing short of toxic.
