NSRI's Ian Klopper explains how it responded to three fishermen found clinging to their capsized boat off Kommetjie in Cape Town.

NSRI Kommetjie station commander, Ian Klopper explains to CapeTalk's Kieno Kammies how it responded to three fishermen found clinging to their capsized boat after spending a night in the icy ocean off Kommetjie in Cape Town.

The boat was out at 10pm on Sunday night on a reef near Cape Point.

It appears they got some rope entangled in their propellers and were unable to carry on going.

Ian Klopper, Kommetjie station commander - NSRI

They were swamped by a wave, the boat capsized ad the three fishermen were thrown into the sea, explains Klopper.

The three gentlemen hung onto the upright hull for the rest of the night. The water was about 12 degrees when we got to them.

Ian Klopper, Kommetjie station commander - NSRI

Luckily, a rubber duck passed them in the morning and picked them up. NSRI was alerted and met the men on shore with an ambulance and rescue vehicles.

The paramedics assessed them and took them to the hospital. They were treated for severe hypothermia.

Ian Klopper, Kommetjie station commander - NSRI

The boat was recovered and brought back to Hout Bay Harbour.

I am amazed. They were in the water from 10 o'clock at night until about 8.30 in the morning in that cold water just clinging onto that little dingy that was badly damaged. The fact they managed to hold onto that all night just amazes me. it was very misty and dark.

Ian Klopper, Kommetjie station commander - NSRI

The rule of hanging onto the boat is the right thing to do when a boat capsizes.
