Spokesperson Sizwe Pamla says the union federation has drastically fought for the rights of workers and changed their lives.

The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) will on Wednesday host May Day rallies across the country.

President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to address crowds in Durban at one of the rallies.

Cosatu spokesperson Sizwe Pamla speaks to Clement Manyathela on the Xolani Gwala Show on the union's readiness for May Day and the federation's contribution towards the betterment of the lives of workers.

Pamla says workers' rights have changed drastically over the past 25 years.

You will remember in 1995 we adopted the Labour Relations Act that came out with several clauses to defend the rights of workers. Last year we passed the National Minimum Wage Act, which means workers are now able to participate in policy formulation and legislative formulation through Nedlac.

Sizwe Pamla, Spokesperson - Cosatu

He says because we have an economy that is in trouble, there are still a lot of challenges that face workers, but in terms of legislation serious strides have been made.

Pamla reiterates that if it wasn't for Cosatu picking up the fight against e-tolls, there would be a system that is unworkable.

We would not be talking about a decision today where the board of Sanral out of confusion and frustration decided to temporarily take a step back and stop all the intimidation they have been directing to motorists.

Sizwe Pamla, Spokesperson - Cosatu
