Heritage activist Patric Tariq Mellet says President Cyril Ramaphosa should not put this department on the back burner.

South African artists are calling on President Cyril Ramaphosa to stop using the Arts and Culture Department as a dumping site for underperforming ministers.

To unpack this, heritage activist Patric Tariq Mellet speaks to Clement Manyathela on the Xolani Gwala Show.

When we did this, we were not thinking of any specific minister and it has nothing to do with Nathi Mthethwa.

Patric Tariq Mellet, Heritage activist

We do have a scenario that over the years arts and culture have been put on the back burner. When someone needs to pander through factionalism within the ruling party or they want to reward someone then they get this department.

Patric Tariq Mellet, Heritage activist

We are saying that the arts and culture department is much too important in the process of nation-building to be constantly put on the sides.

Patric Tariq Mellet, Heritage activist

He says the Constitution allows for the president to appoint two ministers from outside of the political party spectrum and they want Ramaphosa to do so.

In our opinion, arts and culture is the soul food of South Africa, and it is the cement that binds us.

Patric Tariq Mellet, Heritage activist
