Salt River school gets the gift of a colourful, well-stocked library

Mike Schalit says Cecil Road Primary is the 14th school to benefit from the MAL Foundation initiative, in collaboration with its partners,

There are good people doing good things in South Africa.

Bianca Resnekov speaks to Mike Schalit, chief creative officer at Net#work BBDO and the co-founder of the non-profit MAL Foundation.

It aims to 'make a difference' through creativity and so far, through its library initiative, it's made a difference at 14 needy schools.

This is our 25th year. We started with one, who could have thought we'd grow so quickly.

It's a message to all of us as South Africans. There are things you can do - you start slowly, with small companies and you put one foot in front of the other.

Schalit says the new library at Cecil Road Primary has been designed to look colourful and inviting and will give around 500 children access to more than 2 000 books.

It's not a handout. We're going to work with the school going forward.

Schools just don't have the resources - there are so many other things they have to put their time and money into.
