Nutritional expert confirms health benefits of fasting

The holiest month in the Islamic calendar, Ramadan, starts on Tuesday 6 around the world.

This is the time when followers of the Muslim religion abstain from eating, drinking, smoking and sexual relations from dawn to sunset.

But is there any health benefit to fasting?

Nutritional specialist Dr Charlotte Prout-Jones says fasting is one of the most powerful tools for healing.

Having said that, one needs to be very careful how you fast because it has become very trendy now. One hears intermittent fasting all over and people are losing weight with it.

Dr Charlotte Prout-Jones, Nutritional specialist

Prout-Jones admits that there are spiritual benefits to fasting but says in order to maintain the health benefits one needs to be careful how they break the fast.

The best way to break a fast would be with water-saturated fruits.

Fasting for health reasons needs to be longer than 12 hours, explains Prout-Jones.

She says the deep healing only takes place after the third day but you cannot withhold water as it is vital in flushing out toxins. Many bodily functions are dependent on water.

As you go from the third day onwards, then you go into the therapeutic healing process, which is the ultimate of healing.
