Western Cape working on a provincial policy to support transgender pupils

A prestigious all-girls government school is believed to have made history as it has enrolled a 14-year-old transgender pupil into the institution.

It is understood the child who had been at a boys’ schools since Grade 1 identified as a girl since the start of school.

We understand that after her mother approached Wynberg Girls’ in September, the school agreed to place her.

Western Cape Department of Education spokesperson Bronagh Hammond shares details on the case which had to be brought before the school governing body.

She explains that this is the first time that a transgender child has been accepted into a single-sex school environment.

Hammond says there are a lot of complexities involved and the department is working on assisting schools with their policies around the matter.

We have had previous cases whereby learners have been in a single-sex school and have gone to a multi-sex school.

It is something we are trying to assist schools in terms of being supportive of them in terms of their policies and how to manage this process because there are quite a lot of complexities involved.

Bronagh Hammond, Spokesperson - Western Cape education department

There has not been a departmental policy, we are only really drafting it right now. There are quite a few prinsicplas at schools who have been dealing with these issues over the past few years and needed guidance on it and there is no national or provincial policy on this.

Bronagh Hammond, Spokesperson - Western Cape education department

Hammond says they have worked with various stakeholders to begin the process of creating an inclusive environment in schools.

The main thing we need is communication and education and an understanding of what is actually going on with that learner so everyone can accept this learner on the first day of school or accept the process that the process learner is going through.

Bronagh Hammond, Spokesperson - Western Cape education department

Every case is completely different from another, we have to look at it on a case-to-case basis.
