Business confidence has slightly improved by 1.9 index points to 93.7 compared a seven-month low of 91.8 in March, according to the South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry's (Sacci's) latest business confidence index.
Economist Richard Downing says the current economic background is only reflecting the business climate, which is a bit sluggish at the moment.
He says the index is based on 2015, which was sitting at 100 points.
This means that from 100 in 2015 we are now sitting at 93 on average, which indicates to us that the business climate is not as good as one would like it to be.— Richard Downing, Economist - Sacci
He says there is hope that after the 2019 national elections there will be clarity on policies which will, in turn, boost business confidence. That will also provide clarity as to where business stands in terms of future prospects.
