WC ANC says Survé's statement on its intent to return funds is mischievous

The African National Congress (ANC) in the Western Cape has disputed claims made in a statement by businessman Iqbal Survé that deputy minister of finance and the chairman of the Public Investment Committee (PIC), Mondli Gungubele had a hand in a decision by the provincial structure to return a campaign donation.

Earlier on Tuesday, the party said it had decided to return funds that the Sekunjalo chairperson had given for its election campaign.

In response Survé, who is the chairman of Sekunjalo Investment Group, said party officials told him the money in the range of R1 million, had already been distributed to “all the regions for the express purpose of why it was donated”

He has claimed that there is a political vendetta against him and that the instruction to return the funds came from Gungubele.

ANC acting provincial chairperson in the province Khaya Magaxa says confusion is deliberately being created around the matter.

He says after finding out about the donation he immediately told the structure's treasurer to return the money as it would cause problems for the party.

There were issues that were raised about Sekunjalo in relation to PIC and my understanding was that the matter has not yet been resolved.

As leaders of the ANC we must not be seen as having accepted donations from companies whose integrity is still under question.

Magaxa says Survé's claims surrounding Gungubele's supposed interference are mischievous.

For him to utter such kinds of words while he sees the statement in black and white issued by me, the statement has been written by me personally, I don't know why he would jump and include Gungubele who does not even feature on my statement. That's what makes me question his intentions.
