The Archbishop forms part of the Electoral Code of Conduct Observer Commission which helps promote free and fair elections.

As the voting commences across the country, Archbishop Thabo Makgoba talks to CapeTalk's Kineo Kammies at the Western Cape IEC nerve centre about the work of the Electoral Code of Conduct Observer Commission.

The commission is aimed at creating conditions that promote free and fair elections and to help build public confidence.

Makgoba says the commission will be heading to Siqalo informal settlement in Mitchells Plain, where there have been recent demonstrations, in order to ensure that elections run smoothly.

We will establish what could actually be the causes, and if we can use the talking cure, we do talk to them and cure the situation to enable God's people to exercise this franchise which is very dear to our country.

The 22-person commission keeps an eye on how the elections are running.

If there are interventions needed, the commission will ensure that relevant authorities are called in to remedy the situation.

Please, let's go out there and make today good because we are an enterprise that wants to make South Africa good - so that we can all say, we live in a country where we voted for its existence, we will play our part and hold politicians accountable.

Rev Thabo Makgoba - Electoral Code of Conduct Observer Commission

This is no time for fights, this is the time for exercising our God-given right to vote our government into place. Don't stay at home. Just go and vote.
