The voting process began this morning with the IEC head in the Western Cape, Rev Courtney Sampson starting the proceedings at the IEC nerve centre at Century City in Cape Town.
He talks to CapeTalk's Kieno Kammies about how the opening of voting unfolded at polling stations across the province.
He answers listeners questions.
One says no one had arrived to conduct her special vote. He says he hopes this will be sorted out but suggests that some parties acted as intermediaries for voters and may not have registered for the special vote correctly.
A caller explained she had found herself admitted to hospital before special vote process opened and said there were 600 others in the particular hospital in the same vote.
Sampson explains this is one area that has fallen through the cracks and there is no way to facilitate voting in this situation.
