On election day, trending hashtags reflect a shift to voters' expectations

Election hashtags have been a popular reflection of voters' thought patterns throughout the campaigning period.

But now that it's election day and many people have already cast their ballots, what is trending on social media?

Digital strategist Yavi Madurai reviews what's happening on the Xolani Gwala show and says that just this morning there has been a strong shift from popular tags like #SAelection2019, to what South Africans say they will expect from their elected officers.

Madurai says there is an important reason for this shift in emphasis to people's expectations.

We need to understand that we must make it about the people. The people have decided that instead of hashtagging and making it about the political parties, they are going to make it about themselves.
