DA claims flawed voting process may delay weekend results

The party has called for a full audit of all voting stations to reconcile numbers of ballot papers with people who voted.

The Democratic Alliance is adamant that there were people who took advantage of the flawed voting system and were able to vote more than once.

DA federal executive chairperson James Selfe says it flagged the problem with the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) but claims the matter was not taken seriously until now.

We know that is the case, because some people were able to remove the ink from their fingers, the zip-zap machines were not working in some areas, so people were able to vote without any documentation and they could have voted up to three to four times.

A meeting was held with the Multi-Party Liaison Committee (MPLC) and it was decided to do an audit to determine the extent of the problem.

The committee will reconcile the number of ballots papers with the number of individuals who voted.

If those tally, then we don't have a problem.

Selfe says he doesn't know how long the audit will take, but the IEC by law, has seven days to release the election results.

According to Selfe, it seems the results will not be available by Saturday as previously announced by the IEC, because a statistician must still design a system to conduct the audit.

The DA has also attributed the low voter turnout to the IEC's inefficiency and bad administration.

People wait for an hour just to get to the front of the queue only to be told there are no ballot papers. Of course, they are not going to come back later.

The DA says it might consider taking legal action if it deems the results of the election are flawed.
