Pipa Hudson speaks to Dr Shingai Mutizwa-Mangiza to dissect the results.

With South Africans having cast their votes on Wednesday, Pipa Hudson speaks to political analyst Dr Shingai Mutizwa-Mangiza to analyse the current result numbers.

At this stage with 55% of the vote counted, what we see particularly with the Western Cape, there was a lot of speculation previously that with the formation of GOOD would result in a knock for the Democratic Alliance (DA) within the province.

Dr Shingai Mutizwa-Mangiza, Political analyst

He says looking at current numbers clearly show that the DA is entrenched in the province.

In other provinces like KwaZulu-Natal, there is a sense that the ANC will maintain its dominance. But, if you look at Gauteng, there was speculation that the ANC will dip below 50%. However, all indications released recently show that the ANC will retain its 50%.

Dr Shingai Mutizwa-Mangiza, Political analyst

He says what we are beginning to see is the status quo of what the major metros might look like when the counting concludes.

He says the voter turnout decline also shows the rise in voter apathy.

What is particularly noticeable is the number of young voters who have chosen for whatever reason to abstain from the polls.

Dr Shingai Mutizwa-Mangiza, Political analyst
