Political commentator Richard Calland unpacks the election results.

Political commentator Richard Calland has described how voting patterns are slowly changing in South Africa with middle-class people, in particular, thinking very differently about their political choices.

While counting continues for the 2019 elections, the FF Plus appears to have made strides as it sits at 2.9% of the national vote.

The significant growth, according to analysts, may be because of a change of heart from Democratic Alliance (DA) supporters.

Calland explains.

For such a long time class, race and identity overlapped to such an extent that it almost overpowered the democratic electoral process. What I am seeing in the numbers and polling data that we did is that people are voting very differently and thinking very differently.

Richard Calland, Constitutional law professor and political commentator

Middle-class people who may have been DA are moving elsewhere, black voters who are middle class are saying: 'I am tired of the ANC, maybe I will go EFF or DA.'

Richard Calland, Constitutional law professor and political commentator

I was teasing Tony Leon on Twitter a few minutes ago because he was lamenting the fact that his old constituency -Houghton, has a very poor result for the Democratic Alliance there. That is because middle-class people are voting in different ways and it may be in this election, looked at the bigger picture and thought, well Ramaphosa has done enough to convince me that he is the right person to lead.
