IEC to conduct audit of results and votes cast in sample of voting stations

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) says it will urgently conduct an audit of results and votes cast in a sample of voting stations amid claims of double voting.

While 20 people have reportedly been arrested for voting twice in KwaZulu-Natal, the IEC has confirmed four arrests.

The electoral commission says the audit will cover a "statistically representative sample of voting stations, as well as all voting stations where complaints or allegations of double voting have been received."

Eyewitness News reporter Theto Mahlakoana says more questions have arisen as to the integrity of the elections.

At this point the IEC is in the blind, they are trying to get as much information as possible about what may have happened. The problem could actually be much greater than anyone could have anticipated.

They have confirmed that this is the first time since the democratic dispensation that they have been here. We have always respected the integrity of the IEC and taken what they say as truth and fact but with all these issues coming up, especially because of how they initially reacted to these complaints, allegations and objections, we are now forced to undertake a closer look at what they say.

We have realised that there are lapses in the system. The fact that the zip-zip machine that is used to scan IDs could not identify that someone is voting multiple times.... political parties say they have been raising this issue since 2017.
