The EFF didn't deliver on the promise of an outsized online campaign. Bruce Whitfield talks to Ralph Mathekga and Vukosi Marivate.

People shouldn’t take social media as representing what’s going on on the ground…

Dr Vukosi Marivate, data scientist - CSIR

The Money Show’s Bruce Whitfield interviewed political analyst Ralph Mathekga and CSIR data scientist Dr Vukosi Marivate who were at the IEC National Results Operations Centre in Tshwane.

They spoke about what has been happening on social media (trending hashtags, etc.) and the main talking points for each party.

They touched on the EFF’s outsized online presence, and why it failed to deliver.

Also discussed was the BLF’s failure at the polls despite having trended on social media most this week.

Listen to the interviews in the audio below (and scroll down for more quotes from it).

There was no rocking the boat…

Ralph Mathekga, political analyst

It [the rise of the FF+] is a response to the radicalism of the EFF… I don’t think it’s a significant number [voters who left the DA for the FF+]…

Ralph Mathekga, political analyst

About 35 000 or 40 000 votes will get you a seat… It’s going to be an interesting Parliament…

Ralph Mathekga, political analyst

Twitter is mostly represented by Gauteng…

Dr Vukosi Marivate, data scientist - CSIR

The EFF is still [trending], but it’s changed to ‘oh, they’re not doing so well’…

Dr Vukosi Marivate, data scientist - CSIR
