The Democratic Alliance (DA) overcame numerous problems it had in the last year and consolidated its vote in the Western Cape, according to political economy analyst Daniel Silke.

The DA looks set to continue governing that province.

…We’ve seen the DA come out relatively positively here [Western Cape]… Given where the party was a year ago… the DA have managed to consolidate their vote…

Daniel Silke, political economy analyst

Silke reckons the African National Congress (ANC) lost votes on its fringe to the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) while the DA has lost on its periphery to the Freedom Front Plus (FF+).

The Money Show’s Bruce Whitfield interviewed Silke.

Listen to the interview in the audio below (and scroll down for quotes from it).

The ANC has lost its cushion…

Daniel Silke, political economy analyst - Political Futures Consultancy

The most disappointed on the national level would be the DA… On the other hand, it’s pulled itself back from the brink on where it was a year ago… a fairly decent victory in the province [Western Cape]…

Daniel Silke, political economy analyst - Political Futures Consultancy

This election was the perfect opportunity for opposition parties to score big, and they haven’t…

Daniel Silke, political economy analyst - Political Futures Consultancy

The EFF did grow… to go from 6.5% to around 10% is no mean feat…

Daniel Silke, political economy analyst - Political Futures Consultancy

The DA is virtually double the size of the EFF…

Daniel Silke, political economy analyst - Political Futures Consultancy

The DA… is going to be quite harsh in terms of leadership…

Daniel Silke, political economy analyst - Political Futures Consultancy

Mr Malema will take this as a solid support for the EFF…
