Why athletes should meditate

We could probably all do with a bit of meditation to cope with the pressures of daily life, especially right now post-elections.

On the fitness feature on Weekend Breakfast with Phemelo Motene, David "Mr Active" Katz focuses on how meditation can help athletes in particular, by improving their performance.

Key benefits of meditation for athletes:

  • helps with stress reduction

  • improves sleep patterns

  • speeds up recovery time

  • enhances endurance

  • improves sense of identity

Katz says a lot of people who practise meditation are able to understand the blind spots in their physical performance and move beyond them.

They can actually pinpoint where they're struggling with muscles, what muscle it is, and help change and impact that injury.

In general terms, meditation can also work as a coping mechanism to help athletes switch off from everyday stress.

You're not just taking their athletic performance, you're taking they've still got families, they've got their everyday life as well.

David "Mr Active" Katz, Journalist and producer

Meditation can help an athlete just perform and not allow those things to weigh them down.
