2019 South African general election: Analysis and News

[VIDEO] Voter appears intoxicated as he brings IEC booth crashing down

The right to vote is regarded as one of the fundamental cornerstones of South Africa's democracy since 1994.

So when a video of a man who appeared drunk, attempting to cast his vote on Wednesday 8 May, was posted online, social media had lots to say.

He can be seen standing in the cardboard blue-and-white IEC-branded voting booth, seemingly intoxicated. He struggles to hold the pen and ballot paper.

Then as he holds onto the cardboard desktop to balance himself, the whole structure topples over, and he falls ungraciously onto the floor, taking the booth down with him.

Twitter users raise the fact that it is illegal to take photographs in the booth, so is taking a video even legal?

Others asked, was his vote counted, many wondered if he had managed to make any mark on the ballot paper at all, and some comments questioned how responsible this attitude was while voting.
