Cheetah research discovery throws light on new way to monitor sports performance

A University of Cape Town research project has developed a new way of capturing the movement of the human body.

The project was initially meant to investigate the properties of cheetahs’ tails in relation to robotics, which it has achieved, but now the same method will be used to monitor sportsman's performance.

UCT department of electrical engineering senior lecturer Dr Amir Patel says the Sports Science Institute of South Africa is excited about what the new system could do to monitor sports performances.

This is game-changing because you can place the sensors on somebody running the Comrades Marathon or rugby and it can detect how much impact he is taking on his shoulders or knees all in real time.

We are also in talks with our bio-medical engineering staff and they are also excited.
