2019 South African general election: Analysis and News

Maimane not in Malema and Ramaphosa's league and lacks charisma, say DA members

The elections have come and gone, and political parties are going back to the drawing back to see what they did right or wrong.

The big question on many people's lips is whether Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Mmusi Maimane will still lead the party or face the axe?

The DA saw a significant dip in votes in the general elections from 22.23% in 2014 to 20.77% this year.

Callers on the open line say Maimane is to blame for the DA's poor performance.

Mmusi Maimane is not charismatic, he is not in the league of Julius Malema or Cyril Ramaphosa. The DA needs to appoint a charismatic leader who will articulate the policies of the party.

McKaiser says he doesn't know who will replace Maimane should he be axed but Herman Mashaba would not make the cut.

Herman is a bit of a weird one because he is like Donald Trump. He is an outsider. Herman came into politics on some 'I am not a politician that is why you should vote for me', but I'm not sure if that worked out for him.

I trust DA and that they can make a change in SA. Maimane doesn't know how to speak and recruit people. He always criticises. You don't always have to criticise. I don't know anyone to replace him.

Allan says many farmers were threatened and ran to the Freedom Front Plus.

It has nothing to do with Maimane. Mmusi has done nothing.

Xolani says Maimane must be in the background.

Ramaphosa was way too good for Maimane. We know the ANC is bad, but Ramaphosa gave that hope. DA didn't have anything to offer, so we went back to our abuser. Maimane was way too weak for Ramaphosa. He doesn't have that swag.

Thabiso says she is a DA voter and loves the DA but...

I don't think much of Mmusi, and I used to think much of him before. The DA has two problems. It has a Mmusi problem and an identity problem.

Thabiso, Caller

I am a member of the DA, but I did not vote for them. I voted for Ramaphosa because Mmusi does not appeal to me. As a member of the DA, I couldn't tell people why they should vote for the DA.
