How did Fred Brownell become the man chosen to design SA's democratic flag?

Many are mourning the death of Frederick Brownell, the man who designed and produced the South African flag.

Brownell died in his Pretoria home on Friday at the age of 79.

Joanne Joseph spoke to Roelf Meyer who was chief negotiator on the transitional executive council at the time.

Meyer explains how Bronwell was chosen to design the flag.

By then he was already known for the fact that he had designed the Nambian flag. When we could not get agreement on all the submissions made by many South Africans, the matter was referred to Fred and we asked him to give us a few designs.

Initially there were four designs that I can recall, we agreed on one which was to become our own national flag, we presented that flag to Madiba and Mr de Klerk, they looked at it and said test the people. A decision was never formally made but it was presented and literally became the flag because the people of South Africa accepted it.

When we called him he said 'well I was expecting this call', so he was probably in the making of the flag but without being formally approached.
