Look out for the new CAA number plates on Cape Town roads

After reviewing the Opal Corsa GSI - "looks racy but doesn't have the performance to match" - motoring journalist Ciro de Siena focuses his attention on Cape Town's new CAA number plates.

He says after some reports at the beginning of April that the plates were about to hit the road there was a delay, but they're now starting to be issued.

The City said the changeover was necessary because CA number combinations had run out.

If you're willing to pay, you can reserve a special number from the first 9,999 CAA licence plate combinations.

For ordinary applications, the system automatically generates a combination starting from CAA 10,0000.

The numbers from the CAA from four zeros to four nines have been reserved and you can buy them at special prices. The prices vary depending on whether you want three numbers or four numbers or two or whatever.

De Siena says there is definitely a market for standout and personalised number plates and they can become quite valuable.

They get traded, I know there's a licence plate out there... it's just the number seven and WP - that'll go for a lot of money.
