MPs to be sworn in next week as chief justice receives candidate lists

Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng has received the candidate lists for Members of Parliament from the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) at the Constitutional Court.

The IEC has suggested 830 candidates for the National Assembly and provincial legislatures for the next five years.

The sixth Parliament will officially be sworn in next week.

Eyewitness News reporter Ayanda Nyathi has more on the story.

It is part of the broader process of starting to build the administration that will take over from the National Assembly and the National Council of Provinces.

On the 22nd of May, the National Assembly will have its first sitting and traditionally that is essentially when each of the members is sworn in and that is when they elect the chair, which has been Baleka Mbethe for a while. On the 23rd the National Council of Provinces is going to have its first sitting.
