Spar Group revenues rose by 8.6% (to R54.3 billion) in the half-year to 31 March 2019.

Headline earnings per share fell by 3.4%.

Sales at Spar Group’s Tops liquor stores surged by 19.3%.

The company is wrapping up negotiations to buy a controlling stake in Polish deli and supermarket chain Piotr i Pawel.

Piotr i Pawel has 77 stores in Poland, a country with rapid economic growth and an all-time low unemployment rate.
