'If ANC branches want me to go to Parliament, I will go' - Supra Mahumapelo

Former North West premier Supra Mahumapelo says he will take up a position in Parliament if asked to.

Mahumapelo's name sits at number 58 on the African National Congress’s list of candidates for the National Assembly.

The former premier stepped down from his role in 2018 after North West residents took to the streets in violent protests demanding that he resign amid corruption allegations levelled against him.

The party's provincial executive committee which he chaired was disbanded.

Mahumapelo says while he would choose not to go, he will respect the mandate given to him by party branches.

We must respect the mandate of branches but if it was going to be an individual preference, I wouldn't have gone to Parliament.

Supra Mahumapelo, Former North West premier

Commenting on the South African Communist Party's unhappiness with a decision by the ANC national executive committee to allow Job Mokgoro to continue only as caretaker premier, Mahumapelo says the SACP's role at this stage is to quietly engage the ANC to influence the decision.

If you go on media, you are undermining the political relations that must exist between and among the alliance partners. So whoever is going to be deployed as a premier, all of us will have to rally behind that person.
