A confrontation between uMkhonto weSizwe Military Veterans' Association (MKMVA) spokesperson Carl Niehaus and African National Congress (ANC) head of elections Fikile Mbalula played out on Twitter on Wednesday.
Mbalula said that the party’s decision to elect Cyril Ramaphosa as president prevented an even worse election result. This then prompted the party secretary-general Ace Magashule to dismiss that comment and say the win was because of the collective and not because of any individual in the party.
Niehaus has now taken to Twitter and said Mbalula did not respect his elders and has also blocked him on the social media platform.
Mbalula hit back, calling Niehaus a crook.
Hmmm so this young chap, Mr. Fearfokkol 🙄, @MbalulaFikile, has gone & blocked me. He seems to fear much, especially engagement about his blatant opportunism, careerism & lack of repect for his seniors, such as the SG of the ANC, comrade @Magashule_Ace. Talk about real cowardice! pic.twitter.com/q1SB8GMIrz— Carl Niehaus (@niehaus_carl) May 15, 2019
You are a crook what the hell you doing at luthuli house is still a mystery to us now that we are done with elections we must deal with you .— Mr Fearfokkol | Forever Young (@MbalulaFikile) May 15, 2019
To discuss what prompted the altercation, 702 Breakfast Bongani Bingwa speaks to Niehaus.
I believe we are working towards unity. The Twitter messages that I sent out, concentrated on one thing, and that was the principle that we as a party have to work as a collective. While we acknowledge the significant role that Ramaphosa played in the election campaign, it was the collective work done by the whole leadership and membership of the ANC. That is the principle that I raised, unfortunately, Mbalula turned it to a personal attack on me.— Carl Niehaus, Spokesperson - MKMVA
I refused to go to that personalised level, but I continued to raise an issue of principle, including the point that one doesn't show disrespect to senior leaders. My position has been consistently principled on this matter, the principle of unity and collective leadership.— Carl Niehaus, Spokesperson - MKMVA
Mbalula should delete his Tweet in which he attacks the secretary-general as it was uncalled for. Magashule didn't launch an attack on Mbalula. He was merely stating a principle of collective and unified leadership. You cannot use an attack on the secretary-general or Carl Niehaus as an application for him to go to Cabinet.— Carl Niehaus, Spokesperson - MKMVA
