Africa Check senior researcher Kate Wilkinson takes a look at three stories including a claim made about Thuli Madonsela.

Variations of a story linked to Thuli Madonsela has gained traction on social media, claiming the former public protector said she was tired of the ruling African National Congress blaming apartheid for the country’s troubles.

Africa Check's senior searcher Kate Wilkinson takes a look at how this fake news story by a site called New Soweto came about and hones in on two other stories doing the rounds online.

This particular post has been shared over 1 800 times [on Facebook].

Wilkinson shares some advice on how to look out for fake news sites such as this.

New Soweto are a known junk news site. They have no "about" sections, there is also no contact information and this is important because when you come across an article that may be false, it is a good idea to spend some time on the website itself. Also look at ads that often pop up on the site.

Kate Wilkinson, Senior researcher - Africa Check

The article on Madonsela itself is full of red flags. There is poor grammar and spelling. They even get Madonsela's surname wrong.

It is great to interrogate the details of the article itself. If she did say this, when and who did she speak to?
