Huawei users in SA told not to panic over Android ban

Google is suspending its business relationship with Chinese smartphone manufacturer.

Don't panic!

That was the advice to Huawei users in South Africa on Monday following Google's decision to sever its business relationship with the Chinese smartphone manufacturer.

The global tech firm is suspending the transfer of all hardware and software between the two companies, including its Android smartphone operating system and apps.

But what does this mean for Huawei users in South Africa?

None of the handsets that are out here already or are in the stores already are going to be affected by the hardware changes, they'll only be affected by the software changes.

Alistair Fairweather, Technology consultant/founder - Plain Speak

You're gonna keep getting all the updates, you'll be able to use Gmail, GoogleMaps etc and this may all be resolved. The Chinese may buckle.

Alistair Fairweather, Technology consultant/founder - Plain Speak

I think the software problem is a harder problem to solve in the immediate term... people are immediately going to be throwing away their Huawei devices, freaking out, phoning the call centres. That's a much more immediate problem, but the software you can just literally switch off. Once the handset is in someone's hands, it is what it is.

Last week, US President Donald Trump issued an executive order that effectively bars US companies from using any telecoms equipment manufactured by Huawei.

Find out how SA users will be affected...
