Are fears around the security of 5G unfounded?

French Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire has said that a decision by France regarding 5G networks would be based on security and performance of networks.

5G, or 'fifth generation' is best described as superfast internet, with download speeds up to 20 times faster than we have now.

But there are concerns around the introduction of 5G networks as Arthur Goldstuck of World Wide Worx explains.

The big concern is that all the devices connected to 5G networks and 5G infrastructure are not going to be security ready.

What 5G allows is for far more devices to connect at far higher speed, in other words, the spectrum that 5G uses and the technology has far greater capacity, so you're going to see a massive acceleration in the number of devices connecting, the speed at which we're connecting and therefore the applications running on it and that's going to open a lot of security holes.

The recent trade-ban by the US against Chinese mobile phone manufacturer Huawei stemmed from concerns about equipment that might be subject to state influence and used for spying.
