Nelson Mandela School of Public Governance's Prof Alan Hirsch outlines some of the responsibilities of the unit in the presidency.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has established a Presidential Advisory Unit which he hopes will improve policy development and coordination.

The Nelson Mandela School of Public Governance founder and director Prof Alan Hirsch says this is an important initiative which will help the president to address the huge challenges facing his incoming government.

Hirsch was part of the first iteration of this unit under the Mbeki regime. It was dismantled in 2009 when Zuma came to power.

The reintroduction of this unit is a positive step, he says.

He says strengthening the government’s policy capacity should be seen as a priority and talks to Pippa Hudson about some of the responsibility of the unit.

What the unit could do, if it's able to work effectively, is to identify key policy issues and advise the president.

In addition to that, they can also monitor implementation and report where implementation isn't going well.

The unit will be headed by Busani Ngcaweni who is deputy director-general in the Presidency of South Africa.

A similar unit existed within government under former president Thabo Mbeki but was dismantled during Jacob Zuma's tenure.
