The new man in charge has urged all members of the provincial legislature to work together and says jobs are his top priority.

Alan Winde of the Democratic Alliance has been elected as the new premier for the Western Cape.

The former community safety MEC for the province takes over from Helen Zille.

His official signing-in came on Wednesday, having previously secured the majority of votes against the ANC's Cameron Dugmore.

Winde says he's ready to get on with the job at hand:

It feels great. I'm feeling ready to put our plans into action.

Alan Winde, Premier - Western Cape

But just how will he compare to his predecessor?

I'm very different to Helen. I've worked with Helen for 10 years, I've been part of building this foundation...and Helen's legacy is the best-run province in South Africa and that's the daunting part.

Alan Winde, Premier - Western Cape

During the first sitting of the Western Cape parliament on Wednesday, the premier urged all members of the provincial legislature to work together.

I've said to the opposition parties: 'The country needs so much to be done, so let's do this together.'

Alan Winde, Premier - Western Cape

And what will be Winde's biggest priority as premier for the province?

The single most important thing is jobs. We've got to get the economy going and jobs going. But the single biggest hindrance to jobs is safety and security.

Alan Winde, Premier - Western Cape
