[LISTEN] Civil society groups urge MPs to uphold their oath of office

The Ahmed Kathrada Foundation is one of several civil society groups that have set out to remind parliamentary leaders to keep their oath of office.

The foundation is one of several organisations that gathered outside Parliament on Wednesday, to protest against corruption.

400 hundred MPs have officially been sworn in as members of the National Assembly.

The foundation's executive director Neeshan Balton says the 5th parliament was 'found wanting' in many ways. He says the aim of the picket was to emphasise the importance of each MPs constitutional obligation.

Civil society structures have in their own ways taken on various facets of state capture and I think it is to that credit that today you have seen changes. The foundation thought it important today to reemphasise the importance of their constitutional obligations.

We were there also to reiterate that what we really need is a reduced cabinet with men and women of the highest level of integrity.
