I've created a seat at the table for an African girl child, says Saray Khumalo

Saray Khumalo

Earlier this month the mountaineer became the first black African woman to summit Mount Everest.

She made history earlier this month when she became the first black African woman to summit Mount Everest.

Now back in South Africa, Saray Khumalo has spoken of the moment she realised the wider significance of her incredible achievement.

It's realising that what I've done is creating a seat at the table for an African girl child. It's a humbling privilege.

Saray Khumalo, mountaineer

But Khumalo is no stranger to challenges of this magnitude.

In 2012 she reached the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro followed by climbs in Nepal, Russia, and Argentina.

So where did her passion for mountaineering begin?

It started with a bucket list item, that being Kilimanjaro, which I summited on 1st January 2013...that triggered something.

Her recent success was Khumalo’s 4th attempt on the summit after injury and avalanches had wreaked havoc with previous attempts.

She told Cape Talk's Pippa Hudson that she spent five years training for the climb.

My attitude since 2014 is really to train every day and every chance I get so that I'm ready when the mountain calls.

Saray Khumalo, mountaineer

Over time you realise that you're not competing with anybody but who you were the previous day.
