British PM Theresa May
resigns
EWN UK correspondent Peter Anderson says after the Brexit deal fell through, it was inevitable that she would step down.

After failing to convince MPs to support her Brexit deal, British Prime Minister Theresa May on Friday announced that she would step down as Conservative Party leader on 7 June.

To discuss the resignation, Ray White on the Xolani Gwala Show chats to Eyewitness News UK correspondent Peter Anderson.

This is the inevitable finally coming to play, there had been expectations for weeks and some would say months particularly over recent days that May would have to step aside.

Peter Anderson, UK correspondent - EWN

He says her stepping down comes after she has had a succession of failures in getting her Brexit deal through the House of Commons.

She published the fourth attempt of her new Brexit deal, her serious offer to the nation just a few days ago. And rather than finding a way through and finding a solution, it seems to have galvanised opinion against her as she discovered that she was under fire from all parties. That meant that today was an inevitability.

Peter Anderson, UK correspondent - EWN

Anderson says May had stepped into a difficult job and was dealt a difficult hand and played that hand poorly.
