City of Cape Town's Mayoral Committee Member for Energy and Climate Change, Councillor Phindile Maxiti provides the details.

If you have gone partially off the grid by installing a solar PV system at your home or business, the deadline to have it registered with the City of Cape Town is just around the corner. It's this Friday 31 May having been moved once already from 28 February.

Listeners have complained that the registration process is bogged down by red tape.

The City of Cape Town's Mayoral Committee Member for Energy and Climate Change, Councillor Phindile Maxiti talks to Kieno Kammies about why you need to do this and what the consequences will be for non-compliance.

Currently, we believe it is much easier now because, during the extension period, the City simplified the registration process by introducing the easy online pay registration and we also updated our forms.

Phindile Maxiti, Mayoral Committee Member for Energy and Climate Change - City of Cape Town

He says the website will help guide users and it intends continuing streamlining the process even further.

We don't want to mistake the off-grid systems with the unauthorised grid-type systems. We need to know who is connected and who is not connected.

Phindile Maxiti, Mayoral Committee Member for Energy and Climate Change - City of Cape Town

The City needs the information to distinguish between the two and it is a safety issue.

For all inquiries call Councillor Maxati's office on (021) 400 1009 or 083 7269414
