There are about 38 disabled parking bays around the Cape Town city centre.
The City of Cape Town bylaws allows those carrying the disabled parking permit to make use of the designated parking bays.
There have been complaints in Cape Town regarding a lack of respect from other motorists towards disabled drivers with non-disabled people utilising these bays.
City bowl ward councillor, Dave Bryant says there has to be proper management of the disabled parking bays, ensuring that only disabled people make use of these bays.
We have to make sure that the disabled bays that we have are properly managed and that we don't have people parking illegally in them and that access to people who are legitimately disabled is prevented.— Dave Bryant, Ward councillor - City bowl
Bryant plans to get more traffic officers on the streets to make sure that offenders are fined.
Members of the public are encouraged to report anything that obstructs easy access for the people living with a disability.
