It’s a milestone in the history of blood transfusion, not only in South Africa but in the entire world, says Dr Jonathan Louw.

The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) has unveiled a new service – blood delivery by drone.

We had a discussion… [about] how to help people in rural areas, and hence the drone project was born… We believe this will be a milestone in the history of blood transfusion, not only in South Africa but in the entire world…

Dr Jonathan Louw, CEO - South African National Blood Service

A single delivery by drone costs the SANBS only R10, vastly cheaper than by helicopter.

The Money Show’s Bruce Whitfield interviewed Dr Louw.

Listen to the interview in the audio below (and scroll down for quotes from it).

There have been forays in other countries… but we’re taking it to a different level… In other countries… blood is dropped from the sky… We have developed a vertical take-off and landing vehicle…

Dr Jonathan Louw, CEO - South African National Blood Service

It’s not really a drone as you would understand it…

Dr Jonathan Louw, CEO - South African National Blood Service

We can fly a few hundred kilometres for roughly R10…
