EFF to appeal Manuel defamation ruling

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) will appeal a Johannesburg High Court judgment ordering the party to apologise to Trevor Manuel within 24 hours and pay R500,000 in damages.

Manuel took legal action against the party for suggesting South African Revenue Services (Sars) commissioner Edward Kieswetter’s appointment was based on nepotism.

The court ruled that comments made by the EFF were "defamatory and false".

Eyewitness News reporter Bonga Dlulane has more on the story.

The EFF basically are saying that they are going to appeal that decision because they don't think the judge applied his mind in this case and that they found that the courts are too eager to rule in favour of the 'Thuma Mina' executive.

They disagree, are applying their minds and have instructed their lawyers to file their appeal by 10am tomorrow.

He [EFF spokesperson Mbuyiseni Ndlozi] told me that they believe that the fact that Manuel recused himself when interviewing Kieswetter was an indication that there was a conflict of interest. It seems the EFF is saying that their proof is that they said this in a political context and not in a personal capacity.

Manuel has told EWN that he will donate the money he won from his defamation suit to pensioners who lost their money in the VBS Mutual Bank collapse.

Mr Manuel also says the EFF cannot be allowed to get away with these issues without proof. He says all he wanted was that they apologise because it has cast aspersions on his character and reputation. He hopes the matter will be put to bed.
