'I was shocked and disgusted, disciplinary action will be taken'
After a video of an elderly patient tied on a bench on the floor at Mamelodi Hospital went viral on Thursday, the Gauteng Health Department says it is investigating the hospital.
The video shows 76-year-old woman Martha Marais lying on the tiled floor, tied up under a bench.
Distraught daughter Stephnie Marais can be heard in the video crying out, "This is my mother, this is not a dog, is it right for me to come and see my mother like this?"
To address this horrific incidence, Bongani Bingwa speaks to newly-appointed Gauteng Health MEC Dr Bandile Masuku.
There are a lot of challenges in the hospital, and there are issues we are going to talk about when we have completed the investigation. We have a serious problem with low staff morale in our system, which is one of the priorities I have to deal with.Dr Bandile Masuku, MEC - Gauteng Health
He adds that if hospitals don't have happy staff members, they will not be able to deal with patients with compassion.
When probed about his thoughts on the viral video, Masuku had this to say.
I was shocked and disgusted, and that is what compelled me to make sure that we can deal with it.Dr Bandile Masuku, MEC - Gauteng Health
Masuku says there are protocols that nurses can use to deal with hysterical patients. However, the way the nurses at the hospital dealt with Marais is uncalled for.
Disciplinary measures will be taken, and there will be corrective measures, one of the good things about the department, is that we use such incidents to help improve our services and to correct our staff.Dr Bandile Masuku, MEC - Gauteng Health
There will be disciplinary action taken, and we will communicate to the public going further.Dr Bandile Masuku, MEC - Gauteng Health
