The City dropped the ball on suspension of MyCiTi services - Brett Herron

The bus service between Mitchells Plain and Khayelitsha has been suspended due to a contractual dispute.

Commuters making use of MyCiti N2 express bus service, operating between Khayelitsha, Mitchells Plain and the Cape Town CBD will be stranded on Monday morning as the route remains suspended.

The contract between the City, Golden Arrow Bus Services and taxi associations expired on Friday, and negotiations are still ongoing.

Mayoral committee member for transport Felicity Purchase says Congress of Democratic Taxi Associations (Codeta) took the matter to court to obtain an urgent interdict but the judge threw it arguing it was not urgent.

However, Good Party's Brett Herron says the City of Cape Town dropped the ball.

It appears to me that either the City was not negotiating at all over the last year on conditions that were on the extended contract or they just allowed it to lapse.

Brett Herron, Secretary general - Good Party

It's not a matter of a service being suspended, it is a matter of not having a contract allowing the operators to operate.

According to Purchase, negotiations started in November but there was no agreement reached. They resumed again on Friday night after the matter was thrown out of court and continued into Saturday.

She says the City is currently waiting for Codeta to give it feedback.

The fact that the transport department has had so many issues of noncompliance has made the city manager very vigilant around these issues. He is quite certain that if there is not a 100% buy-in by all three parties the contract may not be renewed.

Felicity Purchase, Mayco member for transport - City of Cape Town

We cannot go down that route with an opinion that says that because it would make us noncompliant.

It is unfortunate that we are at that point. It is quite honestly not our making but we will get past it.

Herron says the situation should not have been allowed to get to this point, calling it "a failure of political leadership".
