The Parklands, Sunningdale area of Cape Town is fast expanding with new housing complexes, office parks, and malls springing up. But the busy road only has two lanes, one in either direction, and traffic is highly congested.
The plan to build a dual carriageway will help alleviate this problem.
Mayoral Committee Member for Transport for the City of Cape Town, Felicity Purchase explains to Kieno Kammies the project to dual the busy Sandown Road which allows for vehicle access to the N7, Durbanville, Killarney Gardens and Dunoon via Malibongwe Drive.
It is a chicken and egg situation, she says.
We don't generally dual the road until the traffic impact says that it is ready, so those developments that have taken place there have precipitated the need for the dualling of the road.— Felicity Purchase, Mayoral Committee Member for Transport - City of Cape Town
Milnerton Estates and Garden Cities contribute development levies to the road project and the City tops up the remainder, says Purchase.
There is a reserve for a train station but it is not there yet...We are looking for a station that will go all the way up the West Coast.— Felicity Purchase, Mayoral Committee Member for Transport - City of Cape Town
Sandown Road is also an evacuation road should Koeberg ever need to be evacuated, says Purchase.
