How Western Cape government plans to trim the fat off its budget

Trimming Cabinet fat
Premier Alan Winde says he is joining other premiers across the country in making crucial budget cuts.

Provincial premiers are promising to trim the fat off their budgets and cut back on spending.

Limpopo Premier Stan Mathabatha committed to cut the spend on his Cabinet swearing-in celebrations while Northern Cape Premier Zamani Saul has ordered the state house be sold and the money used to educate the youth.

But what is the Western Cape government doing to save money?

Premier Alan Winde says the trimming started in 2011 but the handbook will be revisited to see if there's more to be trimmed.

Read: Alan Winde on how he plans to make Western Cape a better place

I have asked that we relook at it again just to see if there are other areas we can trim, but we have added now a lifestyle audit.

Alan Winde, Premier - Western Cape Government

I have said now that we need to review and look at our departments ... how do we come down from 13 to at least 10 departments? We will be looking at it at the bosberaad.

According to Winde, there is going to be a lot of "sweating of assets".

While he is assessing the premier's Leeuwenhof property, there's been a lot of push back due to its heritage status, he explains, saying the property will be considered for events hire because government only uses it for two big events a year.

We will look at how do we use the asset far more often. The departments can use it for award ceremonies or schools for jazz concerts and bands. We can raise money on ticket sales to buy musical instruments for kids... so definitely how do we sweat the assets a lot more.

Winde outlined plans to deal with gang-related shootings after a 12-year-old boy was killed in a hail of bullets in Parow on Friday night.
