More than 27% of eligible workers in South Africa are jobless, with a larger proportion being the youth.
According to Stats SA, one in every three young people in the labour force did not have a job in the first quarter of 2018.
ReimagineSA co-founder Dr Mamphela Ramphele speaks to Kieno Kammies about ways in which to create opportunities for South Africa's youth.
What we don't have in South Africa is a systemic comprehensive approach to restructuring our economy which was designed for 10% of the population under the apartheid system.— Dr Mamphela Ramphele, Co-founder - ReimagineSA
We keep imagining this endless exponential growth that's going to come and save us. You cannot grow a whole field out of one little seed which was intended for a pot plant.— Dr Mamphela Ramphele, Co-founder - ReimagineSA
Ramphele suggests that a starting point to ending unemployment is an Early childhood Development programme that can prepare children for school and the future.
We are fortunate to have one of the youngest population profile in the continent yet we don't have a gameplan for making sure that every child born here is given the kind of nurturing in the first thousand days so that their brain is safeguarded to become the best.— Dr Mamphela Ramphele, Co-founder - ReimagineSA
Every child is born with the capacity to become a genius so there is nothing wrong with our children that they can't read to understand, but there is something wrong with us and the way we approach this.— Dr Mamphela Ramphele, Co-founder - ReimagineSA
