'Ramaphosa needs to stand up and be counted, help the ANC make bold decisions'
African National Congress (ANC) secretary-general Ace Magashule said at a press briefing on Tuesday the party's national executive committee (NEC) had resolved to expand the mandate of the South African Reserve Bank to include growth and employment, and not just a focus on price stability.
Magashule's stance was disputed by several party heavyweights, who reassured investors that this would not happen.
Former Gauteng premier Mbhazima Shilowa says the ANC leadership is not using the opportunity it was afforded by the elections to galvanise support from South Africans.
Speaking to Bongani Bingwa, Shilowa adds that the ANC is too focused on public spats between each other instead of focusing on the serious problems facing the country.
It is one thing for the ANC to be sending out mixed messages; it is another for the government as well to be involved in those kinds of messages.Mbhazima Shilowa, Former Gauteng premier
Tito Mboweni was one of the few leaders who took to Twitter to set the record straight regarding the mandate of Sarb.
One would have thought high ranking officials such as the president or deputy president, other than just Tito Mboweni, would come out and said, guys, we have just been out of the elections the president will open Parliament with the state of the nation address. Let us wait and hear what will be the broader policies to kickstart and take the economy forward.Mbhazima Shilowa, Former Gauteng premier
He says assuming the government wanted to expand the Reserve Bank's mandate, it would have been better articulated by Cyril Ramaphosa.
It is not a matter of Magashule undermining Ramaphosa's mandate. It is that Ramaphosa allows mixed messages to come out. Ramaphosa needs to stand up and be counted and help the ANC make bold decisions.Mbhazima Shilowa, Former Gauteng premier
