Political views will not keep you out of the US, reassures Deputy Consul General
United States Deputy Consul General to Cape Town, Ellen Masi talks to Kieno Kammies about Visa regulations for entry to the country.
The visa criteria for travel to the United States have not changed. This new regulation announced last year and put into effect at the end of May is a way to enhance the vetting process - to ensure that an applicant is who she or he says he is and has legitimate plans for travel to the US. It is as simple as that.Ellen Masi, United States Deputy Consul General to Cape Town
She says they look for the social media identifiers or 'handles' as one extra verification tool.
What happens if you made any derogatory remarks on social media about a US politician or leader?
Masi assures us this will not be a negative factor in obtaining a visa.
Someone's political opinions are always protected. A consul officer cannot deny a visa based on your political opinions, your gender or sexual orientation, race or religion.Ellen Masi, United States Deputy Consul General to Cape Town
A direct threat to anybody in the United States would be a different story, but a political opinion is every person's right to have.Ellen Masi, United States Deputy Consul General to Cape Town
