Red Ants Evictions
EWN reporter Edwin Ntshidi reports on the Braamfontein inquiry investigating the shack demolitions by the Red Ants in Alexandra.

The Economic Freedom Fighters' (EFF) Mandisa Mashego on Thursday testified at the Alexandra inquiry before the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) in Braamfontein, Johannesburg.

EFF leader Julius Malema, was expected to also appear before the inquiry but he never arrived.

EWN reporter Edwin Ntshidi says Mashego explained to the panelists that Malema was engaged in another matter at the high court.

Mashego told the inquiry that the situation at Alex was dire after the Red Ants demolished 80 structures.

She says she was called while attending another matter in central Johannesburg. When she arrived she found that the Red Ants had already demolished those illegal structures.

She found residents very angry and that's when she called a meeting. During the meeting, the police started firing rubber bullets at them and she was advised to hide.

Ntshidi explains that Mashego approached the police but was warned not to do that by one of the officials and that's when community member started pelting stones at the police.

She managed to calm them down and as a result, the meeting continued.

What we are told by Mandisa is that the occupation of land is their policy and there is a lot of land, therefore, she doesn't see anything wrong with those people occupying that land.

Mashego is accompanied by the party's spokesperson Dr Mbuyiseni Ndlozi and other provincial leaders.

According to Ntshidi, Major-General Shadrack Sibiya is also due to appear before the inquiry to give clarity on the development of the Alexandra Renewal Project and the millions allocated to the project.

He was also tasked to look into what prompted the protests in Alex just before the May 8 elections.
